Is a Clerkship Essential to Attaining a Residency Position? Expand Content No. However, all current residents served as clerks prior to their residency. While the clerkship is primarily an educational experience to help students develop academic and clinical skills, the month-long rotation allows attending physicians on the hospital's Residency Training Committee to assess the student's understanding of podiatric medicine and surgery in a variety of situations, rather than being limited to the 30-minute interview at CRIPs.
  8. Inova Podiatric Residency Program History

The program was established in 1986, and was a Foundation based program known as the Northern Virginia Podiatric Residency Program. Although the program had achieved national recognition as one of the premier podiatric surgical training programs, it lacked a "home" base, was not fully integrated within the GME community and residents salaries and benefits lagged behind the national average. On July 1, 2003, Inova Fairfax Hospital assumed full sponsorship and control of the program and the program became known as the Inova Fairfax Hospital Residency Program.
