1. About the Surgery Residency Program

    The Inova Fairfax Hospital Surgery Residency Program is fully accredited by the ACGME. The graduating chief residents routinely complete their training with over 1,100 major procedures and have been successful in entering private practice or obtaining fellowships in their chosen fields of interest. Mission and Program Aims Protected Educational Time The residents enjoy five hours of protected educational time each week, including one hour of morbidity/mortality conference, one hour of a grand rounds presentation and three hours of problem/case based learning in our simulation center.

    The deadline for receipt of applications to Inova Fairfax Hospital Department of Surgery is November 30. The following information is required: Three (3) letters of recommendation from U.S. or Canadian physicians, including, if possible, the chair of surgery or designee Dean's letter (or equivalent). International medical graduates must have letters of recommendation which clearly document U.S.

Moynihan, MD, FACS Chair, Department of Surgery Inova Fairfax Hospital The Inova Surgery Residency Program is a vital part of the fabric of healthcare provided on the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Falls Church, Virginia. As Northern Virginia’s only American College of Surgeons (ACS) Accredited Level 1 Trauma Center, we provide only the highest level of care for our patients. Inova has become the northern campus of the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

We are committed to training and producing competent, experienced, intelligent, and compassionate surgeons, ready for independent practice in any surgical environment. Inova serves the communities of Northern Virginia, as well as being a quarternary care referral center for the entire mid-atlantic region. Inova Fairfax Medical Campus houses almost 1,000 beds distributed among Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova L.J.
  10. Outpatient/Inpatient Surgery - Inova Surgery Residency Program

    Team Structure There are six inpatient services on general surgery. The trauma/critical care and acute care surgery team is made up entirely of trauma/critical care fellowship-trained surgeons. With roughly 3,000 trauma admissions a year, residents on the service see the whole gamut of blunt and penetrating trauma. Four helicopters service the Inova Trauma Center. Patients from Northern Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia are brought by air and ground to our faculty. Attending surgeons are in-house 24 hours a day.
