    What Is Inova's History with Residency Programs? Expand Content Inova Fairfax Hospital and Inova Women’s & Children's Hospital have a long history in preparing residents and medical students. We have primary residencies in internal medicine, surgery, family medicine, podiatry, psychiatry, pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine. We have over 100 residents from Georgetown, George Washington, and Howard Universities as well as Walter Reed Medical Center in the disciplines of medicine, obstetrics, and psychiatry.

    The Inova Neurosurgical Residency Program is part of Inova Neurosciences, which is led by James Ecklund, MD, FACS, President, Inova Neurosciences. Inova Neurosciences offers comprehensive care of neurological conditions, including neurosurgery, as well as neurological education and clinical trials research. Each of the many subspecialty neurology programs are overseen by a Medical Director, team members with individualized resources who refer to Inova Neurosurgery when surgical treatment is recommended.

    The Neurosurgical Residency Program at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus accepts one (1) categorical resident annually. All qualified applicants are considered for interviews. However, due to the large number of applications we receive, we are not able to offer an interview to all qualified candidates. About GME Programs at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus The Inova Fairfax Medical Campus is constantly growing, recently reaching over 1,000 beds with the addition of a new Women’s and Children’s Hospital, adding to the main hospital and the Inova Vascular and Heart Institute.

    James W. Leiphart, MD, PhD Program Director Neurological Surgery Residency Program It is an exciting time to be part of the neurosurgery program at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus. In nearly a decade of neurosciences leadership led by Dr. James Ecklund, the former chairman of the Walter Reed Neurosurgery Residency, the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus has evolved from a level 1 trauma center with a busy clinical neurosurgery service to an academic center with a comprehensive neurosciences program. Inova Fairfax Medical Campus was granted a neurological surgery residency program in 2016.

    Inova Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship We are proud to announce the Inova Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship based in Northern Virginia, providing applicants an outstanding education as well as many extracurricular activities in the heart of the DC region. This program has been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for one fellow beginning August 1, 2021.
