    Academic Requirements Academic Requirements Applicants to the Medical Laboratory Science Program must have completed a baccalaureate degree in chemistry, biological sciences or medical technology or must be enrolled in a degree program at one of the academic institutions with which the Inova Fairfax Hospital School of Medical Laboratory Science has a formal affiliation.
  2. Medical Laboratory Science Program Application Process

    Application Process The school will begin accepting applications for the program beginning in August 2024 on June 1, 2023.  To apply to the Medical Laboratory Science Program, applications must be submitted no later than November 24. Class begins August of the following year. Applications that have been received by the deadline date will continue to be processed. Applicants must submit the following: A completed application form (incomplete applications will not be processed).  The $50 non-refundable application fee (checks and money orders only).

  4. Curriculum

    Curriculum The Inova Fairfax Hospital School of Medical Laboratory Science is a full-time, 11-month training program. The program begins mid-August each year and ends in mid-July of the following year. Orientation is held the first week of class. The instructional time is equivalent to more than 1,700 clock hours or 38 semester credit hours. Credit hours can vary depending on the affiliated university. The medical laboratory science student will study the clinical and diagnostic aspects along with case studies, pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical components of laboratory services.
  5. Program Commitment, Goals, Competencies & Outcomes

    Statement of Purpose The Inova Fairfax Hospital Medical Laboratory Science Program is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, to instruction of students in laboratory theory and techniques and to the provision of laboratory healthcare. The major concern of the Inova Fairfax Hospital and the laboratory is the patient. However, within the framework of a teaching hospital, the Medical Laboratory Science program is able to afford the opportunity for medical laboratory education in a real-world setting.
  6. Tuition and Policies

    Tuition for the program is $6,000 and is paid according to the following schedule: $100 upon acceptance of the position and signing the enrollment agreement $1,180 due on the first day of class $1,180 due on the 1st Friday of October $1,180 due on the 1st Friday of December $1,180 due on the 1st Friday of February  $1,180 due on the 1st Friday of April A 14-day grace period from the date each payment is due will be granted. After the grace period, a late penalty of $20 a day will be charged for a maximum of 7 days.
  7. Nurse Observerships

    The Nursing Observership Program provides an opportunity for college students or individuals seeking a career change who are pursing or interested in nursing to shadow a registered nurse in the hospital setting. Shadowing is for observation only. No hands-on activities are permitted. Shadowers are supervised at all times by an Inova registered nurse. For Adults 18 and Older Applicants must be current college students or other adults interested in a career change and a minimum of 18 years of age.
  8. Nursing Student Clinicals

    Inova provides direct clinical experiences for nursing students enrolled in formal nursing education programs. Schools must have a current affiliation agreement on file with Inova prior to students participating in clinical rotations. Students participating in formal nursing education programs and their supervising faculty instructors must meet all compliance requirements of Inova. Faculty and students should contact the Clinical Coordinator at their school of nursing for information on the orientation process and annual renewal requirements.
