Dr. Lexington Culpepper is a vascular neurologist at Inova Fairfax Hospital who joined Inova Health System in 2019 with eight years of clinical experience. He has an interest in the management of cerebrovascular disease and stroke disorders with a special interest in stroke in young populations, stroke’s racial and socioeconomic disparities, and the prevalence of stroke in persons with HIV/AIDS. He earned his undergraduate degree from Duke University and his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He completed residency training in neurology at Yale University – New Haven Hospital and the University of Illinois, followed by a fellowship in vascular neurology at New York University Langone Medical Center. He chose this branch of medicine because of his personal family history of stroke and firsthand knowledge of its effects. Today, he specializes in stroke medical care and is the Founder and CEO of the Cynthia Culpepper Center for Stroke Disparities Solutions, LLC. The purpose of the organization is to provide stroke prevention education measures and to provide consultation services to healthcare organizations around stroke disparities with the goal of reaching communities of color in culturally specific ways. Dr. Culpepper’s commitment to his patients is that they live well, and that they can return as much as possible to their previous quality of life after a stroke. His clinical approach to stroke involves emergency stroke response and diagnosis, acute triaging, and focused care within an integrated and specialized stroke care team that includes interventional radiologists, cerebrovascular surgeons, nurses and stroke rehabilitation specialists in addition to emergency medical services professionals including paramedics, firefighters and police officers. He participates in clinical research studies at Inova and serves as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Virginia, School of Medicine. He has also taught at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and teaches in Inova Neurosciences’ continuing medical education program. A native of Chicago, Dr. Culpepper currently resides in Washington, DC. His hobbies include researching medical history, specialty baking and weightlifting.
