Barry Frederick Walter, MD

Dr. Barry Walter is a board-certified surgeon. He joined Inova Health System in 2021 and has been practicing since 1991. Read Dr. Walter's Personal Statement Below I’ve wanted to pursue a career as a surgeon since I was a kid. I had a book called “All about the Human Body.” It had a big impact on me. I love biology and I love fixing things, so it was a perfect fit. I want patients to understand their medical problem, how I can fix it, and to feel comfortable with their decision to have surgery. The most important thing about any surgery is for patients to trust their surgeon implicitly. Being a trusted surgeon has given me a purpose in life that goes beyond just work and home. I feel gratified knowing I will leave behind hundreds of patients who would otherwise not be alive, and thousands that are better off due to my efforts. I am proud that I have been instrumental in fundamentally changing the nature of surgery in Northern Virginia. With the support of the founding partners of VSA, I have been able to bring advanced minimally invasive surgery to this area when it was previously almost nonexistent. It is also important to enjoy family and friends and in my spare time I like to hike, sail and ski with them. I have also been active in Tae Kwon Do for 17 years, and am now a 5th degree black belt, part time instructor.
