The Inova Fairfax Hospital-GWU Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship has provided training to post-residency fellows for more than three decades. The training is broad, spanning a range from the acute medical setting to the ambulatory clinic. Nearly 90 program graduates have entered into diverse careers in academic, governmental, public sector and private settings. Graduates of the program include: Chairs of academic departments Psychosomatic medicine division directors in academic programs Residency and fellowship program directors General hospital directors Community health and practitioners Fellows develop their skills in working with the medically ill in the high technological arena of the tertiary care hospital as well as master competencies in managing the primary care patient with somatic complaints. Effective communication with physicians and other healthcare providers is another skill that is emphasized during training. In addition, fellows learn collaborative methods for individual/family interventions and family-centered care that mobilize strengths and build resilience for patient and family alike. Eligibility Individuals who have completed or are in the process of completing an ACGME-accredited residency in psychiatry are eligible to apply for the Inova-GWU Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship.
