Michael G Svestka, MD

Michael Svestka, MD, FACS, is a board-certified general surgeon and assistant professor of medical education at the University of Virginia School of Medicine at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus. He is actively engaged in resident and student education and serves on the medical executive committee at Inova Fair Oaks hospital. Dr. Svestka is an active member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and serves as a peer reviewer for the SAGES affiliate journal, Surgical Endoscopy. He is committed to staying up to date on the latest research and techniques in the field of hernia surgery, and is a member of the ACHQC, a national database designed to track hernia outcomes. Born and raised in McLean, VA, Dr. Svestka is a native of the DC metro area, and a graduate of St. Albans school at Washington National Cathedral. He completed his BA degree at the College of William and Mary, followed by a postbaccalaureate at Harvard, before attending Eastern Virginia Medical School. He completed a 5-year residency in general surgery at SUNY Stony Brook in New York, where he served as administrative chief resident, garnering five teaching awards during his tenure. Following residency, he spent six months at the Cleveland Clinic Comprehensive Hernia Center learning the latest techniques in abdominal wall reconstruction. With a focused practice in complex hernia surgery, he is a high-volume abdominal wall reconstruction specialist with experience in both open and robotic approaches. I strive to address all of my patients’ questions and concerns, and it is my goal to fully explain the diagnosis, all available care options and what to expect from treatment. My practice focuses on complex hernias including repeat surgery, mesh complications, revision of prior hernia repairs, and very large hernias requiring abdominal wall reconstruction. I use state-of-the art robotic and open approaches at the forefront of current surgical technique and remain committed to staying up to date on the latest advances in the field. Outside of the hospital, I enjoy spending time with my wife and family, running and playing chess.
