Sally G Safferson, NP

Sally Safferson is a board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner with more than a decade of experience in a variety of OB-GYN fields including infertility, pelvic floor therapy, outpatient gynecology, and labor and delivery. She joined Inova Health System in 2021. Sally received her master’s in nursing from the women’s health nurse practitioner program at Drexel University in Philadelphia and her bachelor’s in nursing from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Sally's primary goal is to make patients feel at ease discussing their most personal concerns. She has a special interest in caring for young women and provides a safe, inclusive and educational environment for patients' first pelvic examinations and for discussions of issues such as irregular menses or contraception. Sally provides comprehensive contraceptive counseling to find the right option for each patient, including IUD and contraceptive implants. She is available to see patients for same-day or next-day evaluations of vaginitis, urinary tract infections, emergency contraception, breast concerns and more. Sally is able to assess and manage heavy, painful or irregular bleeding patterns. She will review the patient’s history, perform appropriate examinations and testing, order additional lab work and imaging, and create a care plan that best suits the need of the patient. Sally treats the annual well-woman exam as an opportunity to check in about how her patients are doing in each year of life, from puberty through menopause and beyond. She is committed to helping patients through conditions that affect their everyday lives, such as urinary incontinence or painful intercourse. Sally also sees obstetrics patients and is eager to help women through pregnancy and postpartum. As a mother herself, Sally understands the physical and emotional changes that come with pregnancy, delivery and the postpartum period. She is available for breastfeeding support, including managing complications such as mastitis and referring patients to specialists when needed, as well as connecting patients with the appropriate resources for postpartum anxiety and depression.
