Inova Fairfax Medical Campus PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program: Overview

The Inova Fairfax Medical Campus PGY1 pharmacy residency program has been ASHP accredited since 1990. Our post-graduate training program is designed to prepare pharmacists to pursue a clinical pharmacy career in a health system environment. Our residents have gone on to become patient care clinical pharmacists in a hospital setting or have gone on to matriculate into a PGY2 residency training program in their area of choice. The primary emphasis of the PGY1 pharmacy practice residency program is to build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and promote the development of key practice skills that will grow our trainees into confident, competent clinical pharmacy clinicians. PGY1 pharmacy residency programs focus on general competencies in managing medication-use systems and support optimal medication therapy outcomes for patients with a broad range of disease states. Our site allows opportunities in a number of various specialty areas such as critical care, cardiology, pediatrics, oncology and organ transplant. Residents will also be given the opportunity to develop and enhance their practice management and leadership skills through focused departmental responsibilities. Curriculum I. Orientation & Pharmacist Training 1 month (July) Comprehensive overview of distributive and clinical services provided by the Department of Pharmacy Computer training Resident lecture series II. Clinical Rotations Residents will be exposed to a wide variety of required and elective experiences as well as longitudinal experiences that last the duration of residency. The schedule will be determined by the resident and the residency program director during the orientation period but can always be subject to change.
