Frequently Asked Questions About Inova's Adolescent PHP and IOP Programs

Are Your Services Covered by Insurance (Which Ones), When Will I Receive a Bill, and Are There Payment Options? Expand Content We are contracted with many of the insurance companies that offer in and out of network benefits for programs at Inova Kellar Center. We recommend families contact their insurance companies directly to understand their behavioral health benefits. At the time of the call to schedule an assessment, we collect insurance information and the financial counselor calls for benefit verification as a courtesy to the family. On the day of the assessment, the family is provided with a cost estimate based on the quote provided by the insurance carrier. On that estimate, there is a phone number that families can call with any billing inquiries. Families also have the option to meet with the financial counselor at Kellar Center for additional clarification of benefits. What Is the Schedule and Services Provided Within Each Program? Expand Content Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): The partial hospitalization program is Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. While the adolescent is here, they will receive individual, family, and group therapy along with a psychiatric evaluation and medication management by our staff psychiatrist. Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP): The intensive outpatient programs consist of group therapy every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. When Are the IOP Multi-Family Group Sessions, and What Happens Here? Expand Content Substance Use track: Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.  Mental Health track: Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.  The multi-family group sessions are part of the Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), and require at least one parent of each adolescent in the program to join the session. These larger groups teach strategies to improve family relationships and communication. What Is the Estimated Length of Stay (Per Program)? * Expand Content Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): The estimated length of stay varies from adolescent to adolescent as we try to individualize their needs. On average the partial hospitalization program is anywhere from 10 – 14 treatment days. Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP): The Mental Health IOP is approximately 8 to 12 weeks in duration, while the Substance Related Disorders IOP is a 10 to 12 week commitment.  * NOTE: These are purely estimates, as the discharge plan depends on the progress of the adolescent. Is Transportation Provided? Expand Content We are sorry, but we cannot provide transportation either to or from the Inova Kellar Center. What If My Adolescent Does Not Want to Participate in Treatment? Expand Content All of our programs are voluntary. The adolescent needs to be agreeable to starting the program, and must be willing to participate. What Are Some of the Conditions That You Treat Within Your Programs? Expand Content We treat a variety of emotional struggles at Inova Kellar Center. Our programs offer dual diagnosis support which means that if we’re treating a mental health condition, we also look at other conditions such as substance use. The opposite is true as well in that if the adolescent is here to treat a substance use disorder, we will also look at the underlying triggers to the use and help the adolescent develop healthier coping skills. The emotional struggle can be increased anxiety or depression and safety concerns that don't require immediate hospitalization, significant decrease in energy and motivation leading to increased isolation or withdrawal, high risk behaviors to include substance use, deterioration in academic functioning or consistent absences from school, and/or significant family conflict that contributes to the overall deterioration in functioning.  How Will I Know That My Child Is Appropriate for This Program? Expand Content You and your adolescent will initially participate in an intake assessment with one of our clinicians. During that assessment, it will be determined whether a program recommendation is necessary. If so, a recommendation will be made. If the presenting symptoms do not qualify your adolescent for either a service or a program at Inova Kellar Center, we will then provide you with referrals to practitioners or programs in the community. How Do I Have My Child Evaluated for Your Programs? Expand Content The parent can call the intake line at 703-218-8500 to talk with an intake clinician who will discuss your current concerns about your adolescent, and, if appropriate, will schedule an intake assessment for the next available appointment time.
