FROM OUR BLOG: Breast Cancer Screening and Detection: 5 Frequently Asked Questions Breast Screenings There are multiple options for breast cancer screening, including genetic counseling and testing, clinical breast exams with an experienced healthcare provider, and breast imaging including mammograms, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast. However, timing and frequency of breast cancer screenings will be determined by whether or not you are at an average or above-average risk for developing breast cancer. If you are average risk and fall under the criteria below, and have not had a mammogram within the last year, we ask you to schedule your mammogram first before calling to schedule an appointment. Women between 40 and 44 have the option to start screening with a mammogram every year. Women 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year. Women 55 and older can switch to a mammogram every other year, or they can choose to continue yearly mammograms. Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live at least 10 more years. All women should understand what to expect when getting a mammogram for breast cancer screening – what the test can and cannot do.
