Common Orthopedic Trauma Injuries

Patients with acute damage to the musculoskeletal system seek treatment at Inova’s Orthopedic Trauma and Fracture Care Program for a wide range of difficult orthopedic conditions. Complex peri-articular fractures Pelvis and acetabluar fractures Acetabular is the part of the pelvis that forms the hip joint. Acetabular trauma is damage to the socket of the hip joint but is different than a hip fracture. Post-traumatic deformity  This is a change in musculoskeletal shape or form after a trauma, injury or illness. Fracture non-unions and mal-unions  Non-union is the failure of fracture fragments to unite or heal. Mal-union is healing of a fracture in an improper position. Infections  Bacterial infections are a common source of musculoskeletal abnormalities. Acute fractures Most of these one-time injuries to the bone are emergencies. If the fracture penetrates skin, there is high risk of infection. Geriatric fractures These fractures affect older adults. Patients are often transferred to Inova Fairfax Hospital by ambulance or air transport from within a 200-mile radius. In addition, physicians located elsewhere in the United States frequently request their patient be transferred into the care and expertise of Inova’s orthopedic trauma team.
